Walter H.
Walker
Oct 9, 1934 — Mar 12, 2023
Walter H. Walker of Hutchinson, KS, passed away March 12, 2023 at the age of 88.
He was born in Hutchinson, KS on October 9, 1934 to Edith and Roy Walker. He attended local schools and later in life, graduated from Hutchinson Community College. Walter enlisted at a young age to serve in the United States Army for five years. While stationed in Tokyo, Japan, he met and married his wife, Aiko. They shared 66 years of marriage together and raised three children.
In 1959, following his military service, Walter joined the Hutchinson Police Department. He earned the rank of Lieutenant during his career, retiring after 32 years of service. While still employed with the police department, he dedicated many weekends and weeks away from his family to serve with the Kansas Army National Guard. He retired from the Guard with over 31 years of service.
Walter participated in Scouting when his family was young. He kept active in retirement by lifeguarding at the Y.M.C.A and eventually volunteering and working for the Delos V. Smith Senior Center. His most enjoyable hobby was traveling. There were many memorable road trips taken with his family. After his children were grown, Walter and Aiko frequently journeyed to destinations all over the country and throughout the Caribbean. He loved everything from the adventures of a Windjammer sailing cruise, to the simple life of looking out over his garden from his back porch deck with a cup of coffee.
He is survived by his wife, Aiko; daughter, Sandra Keel (James); sons, James Walker (Donna), Larry Walker (Linda); sister, Geraldine Shafer; five grandchildren: Rachael, Taylor, Alex, Audrey, Jessica; four great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date in honor of Walter's wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Paralyzed Veterans of America , and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67502.
