Obituary

Viola Agnes (McCullough) Shaw, 93, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, KS.

She was born on April 16, 1931, on the family Homestead in Pritchett, Colorado in Baca County, the daughter of Moody W. and Fanny C. (Kendall) McCullough.  She and her family moved to Medicine Lodge, KS in 1935.  She attended a one-room country school at Mumford on Ridge Road in Barber County.  She then attended Medicine Lodge High School, graduating with the class of 1949.  She attended Bible Baptist Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX.

Viola worked for 25 years at Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Services (ASCS), (now Farm Service Agency FSA) in Barber County, Pratt County and Reno County.  After retiring from FSA, she worked at the Hutchinson Public Library for 6 years.

Viola played the piano and organ since the age of 16.  She also played the accordion and was faithful in sharing these God given musical talents with her church, family, and friends.  She was a Charter Member of New Hope Baptist Church, Hutchinson, KS.  She was the church treasurer for 14 years until she suffered a stroke in 2010.

She was formerly married to Robert Lawson and J. D. Winborne.

She married Jack Shaw Sr., on August 5, 1977. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, brothers, Jim, Tom, Jack, and Roy McCullough.

Viola is survived by her children, Judith (Paul) Henson, Bill (Roylene) Lawson, and Vicky Winborne Stecklein; grandchildren, David (Katie) Renfro, Benjamin Renfro, Krista (Michael) Marshall, Colby (Jesse) Evans, Zachary (Miranda) Lawson, Tori (Mark) Ellsaesser, and Tyson (Rachel) Stecklein; and twelve great grandchildren.  Stepchildren, Jack W. (Dee) Shaw Jr., Diana (Rick) Ries and Terry Jean Keller.  Eight step grandchildren, twelve step great-grandchildren and one step great-great grandson.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Highland Cemetery, 803 N. Iliff, Medicine Lodge, KS, with Pastor Harold Nelson officiating.  A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS  67502.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Wounded Warrior Project and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.
