Vera A. Mann, 89, passed away December 9, 2018 at the Hospice House in Hutchinson, KS. She was born July 20, 1929 in Sterling, KS the daughter of Albert and Carrie (McFarland) Young.
Vera was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Sterling. On November 22, 1951 she married Howard Mann in Sterling, KS.
Vera graduated in 1947 from Sterling High School and continued her education at Sterling College, then earned her Master's Degree in Teaching from Emporia State. She taught Home Economics in Plevna High School, taught elementary school in Wichita and spent most of her 37 years teaching in the Hutchinson Public system. Vera was always active and learning. She enjoyed sewing, reading, crafting, camping and traveling the country east to west and top to bottom. Affectionately known as the "soda fountain lady", Vera visited every soda fountain in Kansas for a cherry limeade as a member of the Kansas Explorer Club. Always proud of her Kansas heritage, her favorite flower was the Sunflower. Her other favorite pastime was collecting and repairing broken dolls. Vera was a passionate classroom teacher and also taught Sabbath School for Sterling's Reformed Presbyterian Church, yearly Vacation Bible Schools and dozens of church camps. Always the teacher, Vera rounded out her teaching career by assisting computer classes at the Delos V. Smith Senior Citizen Center and when asked on how she wanted to be remembered, she replied, "as a teacher". Vera will be missed by her family, but her legacy lives on in the lives of her students who learned math, reading, and Bible stories in her classrooms.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband Howard, and a brother, Ervin Young.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Mann and husband Robert, son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Mann and wife Trish; two grandchildren, Carrie Stern and Amber Keele; two great-grandchildren, Amira and Daniel Stern; one sister, Nancy Marshall and husband Allen. Visitation will be held Thursday December 13, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present greeting guests from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 14, 2018 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS.
Memorials may be made to the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Sterling in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson.
