Richard “Rick” Cooper, born September 3, 1952, in Marysville, Kansas, passed away at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center on August 25, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and genuine connection. A 1970 graduate of Sabetha High School, Rick carried the values of his small‑town upbringing throughout his life—hard work, friendliness, and an unwavering willingness to help anyone in need.

Rick never knew a stranger. Whether in the grocery store, at a garage sale, or chatting with someone he’d just met, he had a remarkable gift for turning simple conversations into lasting connections. The outdoors were his sanctuary, and he found joy in wide‑open spaces, fresh air, and the quiet beauty of nature.

He was an avid collector with a passion for Hot Wheels, sports memorabilia, coins, and historical artifacts—treasures he loved sharing with friends and family. In his younger years, Rick worked numerous jobs, each one adding to the stories and relationships he cherished. He later found his calling in a 30‑plus‑year career with the United States Postal Service, where he continued to build meaningful relationships with the public. His customers weren’t just names on a route—they were people he cared about.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Richard (Dick) Cooper; his infant brother; his wife, Sharon Cooper; one aunt; and three uncles.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Cooper of Green Valley, Arizona; his sister, Diane (Ron) McAfee, also of Green Valley; his brother, Jeff (Cathy) Cooper of Ellsworth, Kansas; his son, Logan Cooper of Hutchinson, Kansas; his daughter, Shari (JR) Stewart of Clay Center, Kansas; nephews, Trevor Cooper and John McAfee; and niece, Ryan Cooper.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kansas Humane Society or Hospice House of Hutchinson, organizations that reflect Rick’s compassion and care for others. Memorials may be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS 67502.

Rick’s presence made the world a little lighter, a little kinder, and a lot more welcoming. His memory will live on in the countless lives he touched, the stories he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
