John Dennis O'Brien, 84, died on Sunday, April 8 at his home in Inman, KS. He was born on March 26, 1934, in Bazine, KS, the son of Peter and Jessie O'Brien.
In 1959, John received his Bachelors, and later his Master's in Education from Fort Hays State. His life-long passion was providing children an opportunity to learn and be their best. He began as a math teacher in Hoxie, KS in 1959. During his 38 year career, he was a teacher, principal, and superintendent of schools throughout Kansas, including Wilson, Augusta, South Haven and Ingalls.
John believed deeply in civic responsibility and served as the mayor of Ingalls, KS (12 years) and Inman, KS (12 years). In addition, he served in the army, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and the State Superintendent of Schools Council.
John is survived by the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Patricia C. (Atterberry); children, Michael (Jan); Sister Joseph Mary, IHM; Thomas (Beth); Rozanna; Peggy (Richard) Norris and Rory (Michele); sister Sylvia Barr, brother Stanley O'Brien, 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and numerous extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Peggy and Helen, brothers Bobby, Maurice, Pat and infant brother James, and other family and friends that made his life so very rich.
The Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson, KS.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, at St. John Cemetery in Bazine, KS.
Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters in Colwich, KS or St. John's Cemetery of Bazine, Kansas in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 East 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67502.
